We are currently searching for a Health and Safety Compliance Manager to join our Ontario team at Emterra Group.  The Health and Safety Compliance Manager position will be instrumental in establishing a culture of Health & Safety, Compliance, and Loss Prevention through the development, implementation, training and maintenance of Risk Management policies, procedures and programs. The position will be based out of our Mississauga office and will be responsible for all Risk Management programs (fleet, plant, and office) for our Central-Ontario locations. This role will support Operations Managers and Supervisors in the establishment, enforcement and management of Health & Safety, Compliance, and Loss Prevention initiatives and systems. The position reports to the Corporate Director of Risk Management.  

What will you do?
  • Support the ongoing implementation and maintenance of Risk Management programs including: 
    • Legislation compliance;
    • Accident management;
    • Claims management;
    • Loss prevention; 
    • Employee training;
  • Fields managed under the Risk Management programs include:
    • Environmental;
    • Health & Safety;
    • All applicable legislation;
    • Physical security;
    • Workplace injury;
    • Vehicle accident losses;
    • Property damage;
    • Liability claims;
  • Accountable for the development and effective implementation of all Risk Management programs for all Central Ontario Emterra sites, including fleet, plant and office environments;
  • Maintain accurate and complete records that meet regulatory requirements;
  • Conduct audits of records required by Legislation & Company Policies;
  • Track and manage all Central Ontario region losses;
  • Responsible for Health & Safety data management including trend analysis and reporting of safety performance to all levels of the organization;
  • Responsible for the implementation of Certificate of Recognition Program (COR);
  • Effectively manages resources and applicable budgets;
  • Joint Health & Safety Committee participation and maintenance;
  • Conduct field audits  and on-the-job performance monitoring;
  • Anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices through work site knowledge, employee interaction and work site inspections;
  • Provide recommendations for correcting safety hazards and unsafe work practices;
  • Maintain up to date knowledge in the field of Health & Safety with particular emphasis on emerging safety trends, methods and practices affecting our industry/operations;
  • Maintain up to date knowledge in the field of Transportation Compliance with particular emphasis on emerging compliance trends, methods and practices affecting our industry/operations;
  • Develop and deliver various employee Health & Safety and Transportation Compliance training programs;
 
What will you bring?
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a progressively senior Health & Safety and Transportation Compliance role;
  • Completion of post-secondary education from a recognized Occupational Health & Safety program or an equivalent combination of experience and training;
  • Risk Management or Environmental, Health & Safety designation or in the process of certification;
  • Strong legislative expertise related to Labour, Health & Safety, Transportation Compliance, and Environment;
  • Experience managing staff and directing activities toward safety objectives/goals;
  • Experience working with management in both unionized and non-unionized environments;
  • Experience with safety committees in regards to auditing, training and implementing best practices;
  • Participation in Safety Groups;
  • Experience managing workplace injury claims;
  • Experience managing vehicle accident and property damage claims;
  • Certificate of Recognition (COR) Program auditor/implementation experience is an asset;
  • Proven track record in designing and delivering safety training; great presentation skills;
  • Excellent command of the English language (both verbal and written);
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite (particularly Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint);
  • Experience in the waste industry, transportation or manufacturing are definite assets;
  • Frequent travel to our Central Ontario sites;  flexibility to travel is a requirement for this position;
  • Ability to work independently and without direction is required.
