Labourer (Utility Worker) - Transfer Station (North Vancouver)

Utility Workers perform general labour-type duties and interact face-to-face with members of the general public to receive garbage in the North Vancouver Transfer Station and recyclable materials in the Recycle Depot. Work is performed on a daily basis in a noisy environment in all types of weather conditions. The transfer stations are open 363 days per year. Applicants must be willing and able to work shifts which may include day, afternoon, graveyard and/or weekend shifts.
What will you do?
  • Greet and direct all customers upon entry of the transfer station;
  • Direct customers and members of the general public to quickly, safely and efficiently unload materials;
  • Communicate/educate customers on acceptable products and recyclables;
  • Correctly identify that materials delivered to the transfer station conform with site rules and restrictions;
  • Assist customers with alternative disposal or recycling options for unacceptable products;
  • Provide our customers with outstanding customer service;
  • Ensure that all materials are sorted/stacked and moved in a safe manner;
  • Monitor inventories of recyclable materials and notify the supervisor when pickup is required;
  • Operate equipment (such as a skid-steer, forklift or compactor) in a safe manner with adherence to customer and employee safety;
  • Complete accurate receiving and shipping documentation;
  • Comply with equipment pre-trip and equipment maintenance schedules where applicable;
  • Provide on-site traffic control as volume of incoming/outgoing traffic can be very heavy;
  • Provide on-site litter control in order to maintain a clean and welcoming environment;
  • Other duties as assigned.
What will you bring?
  • Grade 12 or GED equivalent an asset;
  • Previous experience working at a transfer station or recycle depot considered an asset, but is not required;
  • Strong customer focus along with a calm demeanor during periods of high volume;
  • Forklift certification is an asset but not a requirement;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Ability to multi-task;
  • A willingness to work in all weather conditions;
  • An ability to lift up to 25 lb and stand for long periods of time;
  • A desire and comfort in working within a transfer station environment.
