What will you do?
  • Prepare driver routes and schedules that create efficiencies to optimize routing and minimize costs;
  • Support the Route Supervisor in the supervision of all drivers and trucks.
  • Adjust driver routes and schedule to accommodate trucks needing repair or drivers that are on leave.
  • Work with the Fleet Operations Coordinator to ensure all trucks are in good repair. 
  • Schedule truck maintenance downtime to ensure trucks are in good repair.
  • Ensure all neighborhoods are collected each day.   Collect all same-day and next-day reported “misses”.
  • Order safety equipment and consumables from suppliers as required.
  • Deliver recycling containers to Municipalities and residents as required.
  • Resolve customer complaints as required.
  • Support the Route Supervisor throughout the day to monitor trucks and drivers.
  • Develop and implement company policies, procedures.
  • Ensure driver safety training is current.  Maintain records of all driver certifications and training.
  • Conduct driver safety meetings and tool box talks.
  • Assist Route Supervisor to recruit and train new drivers and laborers.
  • Maintain a class 3 driver’s license.  Drive collection trucks to collect recycling/garbage when as required.
  • Review 3rd party recycling audits and ensure drivers are tagging, reporting and educating residents in proper sorting of recycling to maintain Recycle BC contamination levels.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all workers under your direct supervision.
  • Know the WorkSafeBC requirements that apply to the work under your supervision and make sure those requirements are met.
  • Ensure workers under your supervision are aware of all known hazards.
  • Ensure workers under your supervision have the appropriate personal protective equipment, which is being used properly, regularly inspected, and maintained.

What will you bring?
  • Post-Secondary Education.
  • Experience supervising employees.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a fleet management role in the waste/recycling or transportation industry is strongly preferred.
  • Maintain a Class 3 driver’s license with clean BC drivers abstract.
  • Have a mechanical understanding of truck and equipment maintenance.
  • Geographical knowledge of Greater Victoria. 
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • The ability to multi-task and adjust plans as required in a fast paced work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team-building and oral/written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization.
  • Previous experience utilizing RFID/GPS, GIS, route management, fuel, fleet & maintenance management systems is required;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Advanced computer skills with proficiency in the use of MS Office; particularly Excel is an asset;
  • Knowledge of provincial labor, transportation and environmental regulations;
  • A willingness to work in ‘all weather’ conditions – both outdoors and in an office environment.
