The Maintenance Manager is responsible for working closely with the Operations Manager and General Manager to oversee the day-to-day Metro Vancouver Transfer Station maintenance and operations. This role also monitors compliance with safety and other regulations. Generally, the operation is a near 24 hour per day facility 363 days of the year.  The location for the Maintenance Manager role is Coquitlam, with frequent travel to the other facilities located in North Vancouver and Surrey.
 
What will you do?
  • Ensure smooth operation of solid waste transfer station in accordance with the operating contract;
  • Trouble shooting of heavy equipment (wheel and track loaders, excavators) and compactors;
  • A hands on approach to fix equipment and minimize downtime;
  • Ensure daily, weekly and monthly preventative maintenance tasks and goals are achieved to ensure safe and efficient operations;
  • Oversee up to 3 direct and indirect reports (millwright and/or heavy duty mechanic apprentices);
  • Review and evaluate work to ensure quality, timeliness and adherence to policies and procedures;
  • Supervise the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of processes, procedures and programs to improve safety, productivity, and profitability of the transfer station;
  • Support Supervisors to ensure that they are optimizing the efficiencies of their respective crews;
  • Ensure the health and safety of all workers under your direct supervision;
  • Know the WorkSafeBC requirements that apply to the work under your supervision and make sure those requirements are met;
  • Ensure workers under your supervision are aware of all known hazards;
  • Ensure workers under your supervision have the appropriate personal protective equipment, which is being used properly, regularly inspected, and maintained;
  • Lead, conduct and/or attend safety meetings to maintain favourable working relationships among all employees and promote morale, productivity and efficiency; and
  • Create and submit daily, weekly and month end reports to senior management.
 
What will you bring?
  • HD Red Seal or equivalent experience;
  • Prior experience in a supervisor capacity;
  • Proficient in MS Office suite;
  • A mindset that promotes a positive work environment;
  • Must be flexible to work outside the regular working schedule;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with employees at various levels of the organization; and
  • Experience in the waste management and recycling industry is an asset, but not necessary.
